The Flexible Workplace

Traditionally, organizations have resisted the idea of implementing flexible work arrangements or providing any flexibility in the work schedules of employees. When the world was hit by the global pandemic, remote work was implemented without further discussion. Does this mean that you have a flexible workplace?

I don’t think so!

If you are just waiting for the elimination of restrictions to go back to your prior work schedules, most likely you do not support the idea of a flexible workplace. If you feel that you don’t have control over the work your employees are producing or don’t think that you have enough information to evaluate their performance, you are still not adapted to this way of working.

Flexible work arrangements ignite people’s creativity and innovation, promote work-life balance, and increase productivity. Now is the time to re-evaluate your people strategy, considering what has been beneficial from remote work, and to plan for the future. Your strategy should continue to support the work-life balance of your employees, so they are compelled to do their best for your organization.

Leaders need to be honest about their beliefs regarding this topic and implement mechanisms to mitigate their concerns. For example, one leader may say: “I believe that employees waste a lot of time when they are not at the office.” Mitigation: “Work objectives will have specific deadlines and will be evaluated accordingly”. A conversation around beliefs is very beneficial to learn more about each other and to discuss valid data. There are many myths regarding “face-time” at work. In reality, most employees are more focused working from home than working at the office where they have more interruptions and distractors. At Evvolution we facilitate strategy meetings with leaders of the organizations to define action plans that promote engagement and retention. We can make the most out of these challenging times for greater business success. Let’s work together.
