Transforming a Toxic Workplace

Updated: May 7, 2021

When less than a year ago I initiated my consulting services, I shared my mission of promoting healthy and productive work environments. My dream is that all organizations are places where individuals fulfill their career aspirations, feel energized to give their best, and develop professional relationships. I would like to be in conversations where people describe how excellent is their work environment and how happy they are at work. Unfortunately, I keep hearing negative stories and people describing their work environments as toxic. I will never forget the person who told me: “what you describe is Disney, the workplace is not that like that.”

Trust me - we can have a healthy workplace!

What do people describe as toxic? These are some of the comments I've heard recently: “there’s a lot of negativity and criticism, people don’t trust each other, I feel lonely at work”

“they make me feel like I don’t know anything, I feel attacked, I have started to stay quiet and not share my thoughts”

“there’s a constant fight between departments/work areas”

“supervisors are constantly looking for failures and assigning fault, we need to be on a defensive mode all the time”

“micromanagement is unbearable”

How can we change it? There is a dual responsibility. Individuals need to demonstrate assertive behaviors and organizations must implement mechanisms to develop trust and collaboration at all levels. Ignoring these types of situations is not recommended. It works against companies’ reputations and affects workers' wellbeing.

What can Evvolution do to transform this type of workplace?

Studies show that 75% of employees say that their boss is the most stressful aspect of their day. Improving the employee-supervisor relationship is key to start seeing changes. We work with leaders to develop their leadership skills and learn to build trust with their employees. We help them increase their self-awareness to understand how they can promote healthy work environments. What is it that they are doing or not doing that could make a difference for their people and the office climate? We teach individuals, including leaders, how to manage up. How to positively influence higher levels in the organization to achieve desired results. This is important because sometimes the situations require to change processes or implement programs at an organizational level.

If you or someone you know is experiencing what you would call a toxic work environment, let us present a proposal to make it better. Our mission in Evvolution is that organizations become better places to work and employees feel engaged and interested in giving their very best every day. We help cultivate productive relationships between supervisors and employees at all levels.
